Preparing for Flu

As wild birds continue to carry a strain of avian influenza (bird flu) across the world, it’s possible that the virus will be detected in North American birds sometime this year. This circulating strain of avian influenza has caused deaths among people in Asia and Europe. Health officials are very concerned because the virus contains some ingredients that could lead to a possible pandemic, or worldwide outbreak of disease, among humans. It’s impossible to predict the full impact of a pandemic in Maine, but we do know that our economic climate and workforce is likely to be affected.

Businesses will play a key role in protecting employees’ health and safety as well as limiting the negative impact to the economy and society. As with any catastrophe, having a contingency plan is essential. We recommend that all Maine businesses use the Business Pandemic Influenza Planning Checklist for guidance on preparing establishments for an influenza outbreak.
